Observation Narrative
This stand is co-dominated by large, mature trees of Quercus alba, Liriodendron tulipifera, and Quercus velutina, with younger Betula lenta also common in the overstory. However, an unknown die-back disease has caused considerable mortality of older Betula in the uplands of Scotts Run Nature Preserve, and this plot has a sizeable canopy gap from a recently deceased tree. The herb layer is patchy and shows considerable evidence of repeated, heavy deer grazing.
